Up To Date: Medication Routine and History Tracker
[UI Design, UX Design, Accessibility]

Description

Context
Older adults who take medication regularly often need to remember timing, dosage, and whether a dose was already taken. This becomes harder when multiple medications are involved.
Core problem
Adherence is not only a reminder problem. Users also need a fast way to confirm what they took and review history when uncertain, without relying on memory or reading dense instructions.
Key insights
-
Users do not trust memory and want reassurance through a simple history view.
-
Medication names are difficult to recognize, so visual cues reduce recall burden.
-
Typing and reading create friction, so actions and guidance should minimize text.
Design question
How might we reduce memory and reading burden while helping older adults complete doses on time and confidently verify medication history?
Key Features

Up To Date provides a clear daily medication schedule that helps older adults understand what to take, when to take it, and whether it has been completed. Each medicine is paired with a visual image and time based reminder, reducing the need to memorize pill names or dosage timing.

The medicine log organizes past, current, and future medication records in one place. Users can switch between different medication states to review what they have already taken, what they are currently taking, and what is coming next. This supports safer self management and gives users a simple way to check their medication history.

The app guides users to add their medication during the first time setup, making the core function clear from the beginning. Users can add medication by scanning a QR code on the medicine package, which reduces manual typing and helps prevent mistakes when entering medicine names, dosage, timing, and related instructions. The help section also provides visual tutorials and FAQs to support users if they are unsure how to scan or add medication.

The project extends medication reminders beyond the phone through a smart fridge interface. By connecting the fridge with the app through a QR code, users can view medication reminders in a familiar home environment such as the kitchen or living area. This creates a backup reminder system for older adults who may not always carry or check their phones.
